This show was an inspired bit of lunacy. Kurt was out of town, and we were in the thick of preparations for the soul show next week, so we had to come up with something different with a substitute drummer in about two rehearsals (the two days before the show). We drafted Nelson Bragg from Brian Wilson's band and Alan Boyd to do a "surf 'n' turf" night...the theme being Beach Boys and punk rock. We figured Nelson would already know "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes and Villains" from playing with Brian, but the highlights of this one were the Surf Punks' "My Beach" (which Evie enjoyed way too much!), our first crack at "Coda For Carl" from the Cockeyed Ghost Scapegoat Factory CD, Alan's vicious Mike Love imitation (he works for the Beach Boys cataloguing their live tapes, so the man knows from whence he minces), Nelson's hysterical drum solo on "Dirty Water," and the oedipal version of "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone." The show was surprisingly crowded and worked perfectly. This also gave us a chance to run a few songs for the upcoming Wilson tour, namely "All I Want To Do," "Long Promised Road" and "Little Bird."
