falling down the hill
Release Date: 3/99
Album: THE SCAPEGOAT FACTORY
Writer: ADAM MARSLAND
Lyrics:
Over
Ended
Hairshirts
Rended
Disowned
O'erthrown
Red leaf
Windblown
Falling down the hill
Always will
Evergreen to grey
Blow me away
Gone
All gone
All dusk and
No dawn
Don't come
Autumn
Frosbitten in
the red sun
Adam sez:
This haiku-like little song (I think) was originally written for the Japanese girl band Manic 5-0, although I don't know if we ever played it. It definitely was supposed to be from a woman's perspective; my mental image of a broken-hearted girl wandering through the woods on a fall day was probably taken from "Sad Little Girl" by the Beau Brummels. Deliberately simple and delicate, I remember demoing it with Rob and James in the studio during NEVEREST because I felt the tracks for the album were too busy, and they both hated it. It was too sparse for them. When we cut the track, again I played the drums and Ineko played the bass for the minimalist approach.
The lead vocal is Robbie Rist and I doubling each other and I think it's one of the weakest parts of the album -- I was still getting used to singing with other people besides Rob and I did a crap job on the vocal. I later did an acoustic version that was a lot better, and I used to close my early solo shows with this song.
